Hi everybody! Dearest was recently featured in The Cut, thanks to the recommendation of my brilliant friend Edith Zimmerman — please sign up for her wonderful newsletter Drawing Links; you won’t be disappointed — so I just wanted to send out a quick note to welcome my new readers (hiiiiii!) and shout out a hearty THANK YOU! to all those who have subscribed. I deeply appreciate your support and I’m so happy to have you all here.
I also just saw a wonderful piece of jewelry that probably won’t be available long, so I wanted to share. Check this out:
Circa 1880, this Victorian 14k gold bangle bracelet features a removable telescoping pencil that’s safely held in place by a tiny coiled snake (with a safety chain for further insurance). The pencil extends out to a full 3” length and even contains some of its original lead! It’s being sold by Erica Weiner, who notes that “this bracelet would have been worn by a young Victorian debutante and used to record the names of her partners on her dance card.”
It’s $4,200. *sob*
Oh well. At least it’s Friday! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone — and again, thanks for being here. Drop me a line if you want to say hi!

While adorable, this looks like a snake guarding an emergency tampon to me.
That shout-out is just fabulous. I hope your Inbox has been going bananas this week in the best of ways!
Also, I absolutely love the seeming value-contrast at work in that bracelet: the lavish use of gold, and right in the middle of it a pencil, surely everyone's top pick these days for "hey, name me an item that's not actually free but it's considered basically worthless". A lovely reminder that real worth has so much to do with context (furthermore regarding how that pencil gets used, in this case).
