I'm from Bergen county NJ and we ABSOLUTELY called it Cabbage Night! It wasn't until college that I realized most folks called it Mischief Night, and really it was primarily a small pocket of north Jersey (like six towns) that called it Cabbage Night

I'm so amazed by this. According to this nj.com story, Cabbage Night originated in Scotland! https://www.nj.com/bergen/2014/10/mischief_night_cabbage_night_goosey_night_what_does_it_all_mean.html

Can confirm that we call it cabbage night in western MA. My husband grew up in nyc area calling it Gate Night.

This is blowing my mind. Another friend tells me it's Goosey Night in North Jersey, and nobody knows why! Fantastic. I truly thought it was Mischief Night for everybody and now a whole world of WTF has opened up, lol

If you would like to see some additional coral pieces, see my substack article called "The Flimsy History of Red Coral."

So many gorgeous jewels! I love the color of that coral piece, but I think wearing it would make lots of people point out the worms in your hair.

Happy Halloween!

Lady Clara Paget played an awe-inspiring Anne Bonny in Black Sails. And the ears on that pig.........

Ok, so is ‘mischief night’ another name for Halloween? I’d never heard that (or cabbage night) - born and raised in Virginia from the late seventies to 2003…

Expand full comment

No, it's the night before Halloween! Usually marked by pranks like toilet-papering trees and throwing eggs at houses (although I've never known anyone to actually DO that). From what I'm hearing, it sounds like it might be a northeastern thing - everybody familiar with it seems to be from New England, NJ or PA.

I think our mischief was on Halloween itself, as the “trick” if someone didn’t give you candy. I lived rurally, so the tv-movie version of Halloween wasn’t my experience, so I’m not exactly sure! Thanks for clarifying. :)

I am a nervous wreck and for at least a few moments reading this gave me some peace. Thank you! Off to the archives to buy myself a few more hours of relative calm...

I looked at the Anne Rice auction a few days ago and was so confused by all the flatware that I had to double check I clicked on the right auction! lol. Also if I had £2m to drop on jewellery the négligé necklace would be it for me. I saw a demonstration of someone wearing it on Instagram and even to just touch it or feel it's weight would be pretty incredible. I'd love to wear it against my neck with it open over my back-- a girl can dream!

I think I saw the same Instagram post! It's sooooo slinky - I'm dying to hold it, too. Such an extraordinary thing all around. Hooray to the Pagets for not busting it up!
